Modernising   and   Automating   Ballast   Management

Allseas faced a complex challenge around ballast management for the Pioneering Spirit, a highly specialised offshore vessel used for heavy lift, platform installation and pipelay operations. The existing ballast system was hard-coded for a single vessel configuration, which made it difficult to extend and limited the Systems team’s ability to introduce new features.

At the same time, key ballast procedures involved manual work and complex calculations. Allseas needed a more flexible and scalable solution that could support current ballast operations, future vessel configurations and new regulatory requirements.

Allseas was looking for a software development partner to strengthen its in-house capabilities and bring the technical structure and development capacity needed to modernise and automate ballast management.

Solution

Yabba Data Doo developed an integrated ballast management solution that combined a modernised ballast model with automated ballast procedures.

The legacy ballast model was replicated in open, maintainable Python code, preserving the functionality of the existing system while moving it to a more flexible and scalable foundation. The model was designed to be modular, making it suitable for multiple vessel configurations and future feature development by the internal Allseas team.

Building on this Python-based data model, Yabba Data Doo automated key ballast procedures and added functionality in response to new regulations. The solution also included tooling to support control, calculation and visualisation, helping Allseas manage ballast operations more efficiently and consistently.

The result was a robust and scalable ballast management solution that connected the technical model with the operational procedures around it.

Value

The modernised ballast management solution gave Allseas a more scalable and maintainable foundation for ballast operations.

By moving from hard-coded vessel logic and manual procedures to an integrated solution, Allseas made ballast calculations faster, more consistent and easier to validate. The Systems team gained a modular codebase that can support multiple vessel configurations, future feature development and changing regulatory requirements.

Automated procedures and visualisation tooling made ballast operations easier to control, validate and improve. This reduced manual work and helped turn a complex engineering process into a more efficient operational workflow.
